City Manager's Update | March 7, 2025
Good morning, Monrovians!
We've had some exciting visitors to our town recently! KCAL News recently highlighted our city in their Spotlight Segment. Host Amanda Starrantino toured Max's Restaurant and highlighted the history of Max's and what makes the restaurant so special. Max's, a local favorite for over 20 years, was the focus of Amanda's interview with the owner's daughter who shared the history and mission of this family-oriented business. Fun Fact: Fernando Valenzuela, a former Dodgers player and frequent visitor of Max's, now has a mural right over his favorite table.

KCAL News also toured the Monrovia Historical Museum. Oliver Beckwith, a volunteer board member of the Monrovia Historical Museum Foundation, spoke about the facility, exhibits, and history that contribute to Monrovia's uniqueness. As many of you know, Monrovia is the fourth oldest incorporated city in Los Angeles County and played an important role in the development of Southern California as we know it today. The Monrovia Historical Museum building was constructed in 1925...it is 100 years old this year!
Interested in learning more about our Monrovia history? You can find lots of great information throughout this newsletter including the Monrovia Legacy Project and an upcoming seminar hosted by both the Monrovia Historical Preservation Group and the Monrovia Historical Society.

Rain or shine, please stop by Max's or the Monrovia Historical Museum to enjoy a nice meal and learn a bit more about our community history.
Have a great weekend,
Dylan

2025 Spring Egg Hunt & Healthy Kids Day
Unfortunately we printed an error in the Monrovia Today. On the back page it says the Spring Egg Hunt & Healthy Kids Day is April 12th...that is INCORRECT. The event will actually be held on Saturday, April 19th from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Recreation Park (620 S. Shamrock Avenue). We look forward to seeing you there! The online version of the Monrovia Today has been corrected and we'll be sure to use the weekly City Manager's Update to ensure you all have the correct date. I'm sorry for the mistake which can certainly cause confusion! Please help us get the word out so no families miss out on this wonderful event.
Registration for the egg hunt will begin at 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the event. For additional information, please get in touch with the Community Services Department at (626) 256-8246. Activities will be canceled in the event of rain, but we look forward to seeing you all out there!

City Council Proclaims March as "Women's History Month"
On Tuesday, the Monrovia City Council proclaimed March 2025 "Women's History Month." Women of every age, race, religion and/or ethnic background have made and continue to make historic contributions to the growth and strength of our nation and community in countless ways. Women have and continue to play a unique role throughout our history by providing the majority of the volunteer labor force and were particularly important in establishing early charitable, philanthropic, and cultural institutions. We're lucky to have incredible women in the community of Monrovia and celebrate them during Women's History Month!

Monrovia Station Metro Parking Garage Update
Effective, March 1, 2025, parking fees will resume at the Monrovia Station parking garage (1651 S Primrose). Over the past six months while the parking agreement was in place, the City monitored parking use and it never became well utilized. Ultimately, the City decided that spending nearly $75,000 annually to lease a parking space which no one was using was not worth the cost.
While free parking will no longer be available during the Station Square Farmer's Market, visitors can still use the garage for a daily fee of $3.
For more details on Metro parking lots, please visit the Metro parking webpage.

Thirty residents are improving their resilience and the City’s through Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training. If you are interested in participating in a future CERT Basic Training course, please email sdobson@monroviaca.gov. Future courses will also be posted on Monrovia Fire & Rescue’s Eventbrite page. After completing this 24-hour course, participants are welcome to apply to the City’s CERT program. CERT volunteers assist Monrovia Fire & Rescue with preparedness education, fire patrols, smoke detector installations, and disaster response, as well as have the opportunity for advanced training.
CERT’s motto is “Do the greatest good for the greatest number of people.”

The Door to Monrovia’s History
The wealth of history contained in the Monrovia Legacy Project website is known only to a relatively small minority of Monrovia residents. This ongoing effort to collect photos and documents in one location has been going on for almost 10 years. To date, almost 10,000 items are on the site, with 2500 more scheduled to be added this summer.
If you are a history buff and would like to know more about what information is available at the click of a mouse, join us on Saturday, March 22, at 10 a.m. in the Monroe Room of the Monrovia Community Center, (119 W. Palm Avenue). The Monrovia Historical Society and the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group are partnering to share this information with the public. The event is free – simply show up. Historical Society President Sandy Burud will be on hand to take the audience through the database to see how easy it is to access the thousands of photos and documents archived on the library website. Refreshments will be provided.
Photo: The Airdrome food stand was located at the Monrovia Airport from 1937 until 1940. It was where the McDonald brothers got their start.

Southern California Edison - Use of Drones and Helicopters over Monrovia
As part of Southern California Edison's (SCE) wildfire prevention and mitigation program, SCE will conduct inspections in Monrovia over the next few weeks using drones and/or helicopters.
These aerial inspections allow SCE to assess equipment from challenging and top-down angles, providing a comprehensive 360-degree view. These operations aim to enhance community safety by thoroughly inspecting electrical equipment on poles and towers. This helps identify any damage or potential hazards that may require immediate attention or repair. Each inspection typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the equipment on each pole or tower.
For more information on these efforts, please visit Drones, Helicopters Help Mitigate Wildfires From the Sky | Energized by Edison. Also, please visit www.sce.com/outagealerts and update your contact information to make sure you receive any issued outage alerts.

Monrovia Traffic Signals Project
The City’s contractor DBX will continue the Monrovia Traffic Signals Project to construct new traffic signal and pedestrian improvements at multiple intersections along Foothill Blvd. and Huntington Dr.
On March 13, DBX will temporarily close eastbound traffic lanes at the intersection of Foothill Blvd. and Sunset Pl. To ensure continued flow of traffic DBX will redirect east-bound traffic to the west-bound lanes.
- Lane Closure Start: Thursday, March 13, 7:30 a.m.
- Lane Closure End: Thursday, March 13, 3:30 p.m.
Local residents should expect on-street parking restrictions, temporary sidewalk and lane closures, and increased noise between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Regular street sweeping will not take place in the work area during construction hours, so please take note of posted construction parking signage.
Drivers are asked to avoid Foothill Blvd from Madison Ave to Mayflower Ave for the duration of the work.
We recognize that construction can be messy and inconvenient, and thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as we work through these improvements! Please note that schedules are subject to change. We appreciate your flexibility.
