City Manager's Update | April 11, 2025
On behalf of the City of Monrovia, Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board, and many of merchant community, THANK YOU for supporting the Old Town Monrovia Wine Walk this past weekend! It was such a fun and unique event, and I hope you enjoyed getting to experience Old Town Monrovia in a different way and perhaps learn something new about our Old Town and businesses. We had 27 different participants and welcomed 676 participants...a 22% increase over last year! We had new merchant participants and many, many amazing merchants who continue supporting the event each year!
Overall, the event raised net proceeds of $27,900 which all go back into Old Town to enhance the heart of our city. The event was successful because of you, our sponsors, our merchants and even our wine specialist, Heidi Daniels, who helped pair wines with the 27 participating businesses.
But we have more amazing events on the horizon! Tomorrow, April 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Spring Bunny will be at Library Park (321 S Myrtle) for Spring Bunny Photos! Be sure you stop by and get a picture with the Spring Bunny and explore other great photo ops throughout the park. There will be arts & crafts, outdoor games, and a library storytime for the little ones!
On April 19, the fun continues at Recreation Park (620 S Shamrock) with our annual Spring Egg Hunt and Healthy Kids Day. Expect arts & crafts, face painting, food trucks, vendor booths, and, of course…plenty of egg hunts for kids of all ages! There’s something for everyone so bring the whole family and enjoy a great day outdoors!
There’s so much happening this spring, and I hope to see you at one (or all!) of our events!

Launch of Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Webpage
The Community Development Department has launched a new, easy-to-use ADU webpage that serves as a one-stop shop for anyone looking to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Monrovia. The site walks you through each step of the permitting process, includes answers to frequently asked questions, and features the start of a growing catalog of pre-approved ADU plans. These pre-approved plans are professionally designed and have already been reviewed by City staff for code compliance. Using one can help speed up the approval process and simplify design decisions. Staff is actively working with architects to expand the catalog and has even created a step-by-step submission guide for designers interested in contributing plans. Our goal is to make it easier, faster, and more accessible to homeowners to create high-quality housing options on their own property.

2025 Spring Egg Hunt & Healthy Kids Day
Join us next Saturday, April 19th, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Recreation Park (620 S. Shamrock Avenue) for our annual Spring Egg Hunt & Healthy Kids Day!
Registration for the egg hunt will begin at 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the event. For additional information, please get in touch with the Community Services Department at (626) 256-8246. Activities will be canceled in the event of rain, but we look forward to seeing you all out there!
Street Fair and Farmers Market Update
Some exciting changes are coming to the Friday Night Street Fair and Farmers Market! Beginning in May, the Street Fair hours will be extended to 10 p.m. to allow more time for nighttime strolls, especially as the summer heat approaches. The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts will aim to host the Summer Art Walk in conjunction with the Friday Night Street Fair to draw more attention to their artists, taking place on the last Friday of June, July, and August.
There are also exciting updates coming to the Farmers Market at Station Square. Participation has been low and several factors, including construction and weather, all contribute. Please remember it can take years for a market to begin thriving and even our Friday Night Street Fair is over 30 years in-the-making. Here are some changes coming to the Farmers Market:
- Changing the hours to Saturday morning, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
- Increased advertisements around town and on social media
- Adding new vendors, including:
- Prepackaged food like pastries and sourdough
- Prepared food such as Mexican food, a Bao vendor, and tamales
- Adding more craft vendors
Summer Concert Family Festival at Station Square
After the Eaton and Palisades Fire, Raw Inspiration sought ways to support and assist the vendors who lost business. Raw Inspiration shared the challenges they were facing due to market closures in Altadena and other locations, and we decided to add a third seasonal market. The Family Festival will operate in conjunction with the existing Summer Concerts at Station Square beginning Sunday, May 25, through June 29, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Summer concerts will continue to run from 7 pm. to 8:30 p.m. For more information, please visit their site. The Family Festival will add food, family activities and features which coincide with the Summer Concerts...more family fun while you enjoy your Summer Concerts at Station Square!
Composting at the Farmers Market
Interested in learning more about composting? Stop by the Food Scrap Drop-Off Station! It's as easy as 1-2-3.
- Collect your food scraps and accepted materials
- Bring your materials to the Monrovia Farmers Market every Saturday from 8am-12pm
- Your donated materials will be used to make compost for communities!
At this station, they'll collect food waste, have a fun compost sorting game for kids to learn about what does and doesn't go into the compost bin, AND you can walk away with a small bags of compost for your own garden!!
Every week, about 10-50 lbs of food scraps are collected for the community compost bins to create a nutrient base for all gardens!
Monrovia Youth Commission April 2025 Calendar
Teens are welcome to join the Monrovia Youth Commission next month for fun events! Youth Commissioners serve the community through volunteerism and advising the Community Services Commission on youth programming. If you know of any youth who are interested in the program, please have them contact the Community Center at 626-256-8233

The Addams Family Musical

Small Space & Container Gardening - Earth Day Plant Party
Come celebrate Earth Day and learn all about small space and container gardening! This workshop will be held at our newest garden location, Monrovia Community Garden South (1650 S Magnolia). No cost and open to all. Dwarf fruit trees will be raffled at 10:15 a.m. & 11:15 a.m. You must be present to claim your prize! Parking at the free Park & Ride lot (168 W Pomona) is recommended.

Honoring Two Pioneering Monrovia Sisters
Join the community in honoring the remarkable legacies of Anna H. Jones and Dr. Sophia B. Jones, trailblazing African American sisters whose lives broke barriers in education and medicine. Though their contributions were nationally significant, their final resting places at Live Oak Memorial Park have remained unmarked until now.
On Saturday, May 3, a special celebration of their lives will begin with a program and luncheon at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church (925 S Shamrock), followed by a grave marker dedication at 3:00 p.m. at Live Oak Memorial Park. Born in the 1850s, the Jones sisters made historic strides against racial and gender barriers. Anna was a visionary educator and civil rights leader; Sophia, the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School, helped found the nursing program at Spelman College. Both called Monrovia home in their later years.
Come celebrate their enduring impact and help bring long-overdue recognition to two extraordinary women who shaped history!

Monrovia's History Through Architecture!
The Monrovia Historical Museum is excited to announce the Grand Opening of their latest exhibit, “Monrovia’s History Through Architecture!” Join the Museum on the same day as the 41st Annual MOHPG Historic Home Tour. Advance tickets for the Historic Homes Tour are now on sale, available at Charlie's House or through the MOHPG website. The event will take place on Sunday, May 4, 2025, and you can also purchase tickets at the Museum on the morning of the tour. Best of all, admission to the Museum is free!. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore Monrovia's architectural history before you visit the homes on tour!
Join the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts on Friday, April 25 at the Community Center (119 W Palm Ave) from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. to see the new work of artists! Art will be on display and for sale there will also be live musical entertainment, refreshments donated by the Rivanis Baking Company and Wine of the Month Club! It's a free event for all ages, no need to RSVP
So All May Read Fundraiser
Monrovia Reads invites you to the annual So All May Read fundraiser on May 8, 2025, at the Doubletree by Hilton (924 W Huntington)! This year, Monrovia Reads will honor John Wilson with their Literacy Legacy Award for his contributions to the community and the organization.

Monrovia Garden Club: April 2025
Join the Monrovia Garden Club on Tuesday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m. for their monthly meeting at the First Presbyterian Church (101 E Foothill). This month’s featured program, “Rooted in History: Garden Tales at the Huntington” by Sandy Masuo, explores plant stories and horticultural history captured in The Huntington’s botanical collections. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A session.

Free Compost & Mulch Event - Tomorrow!
The City of Monrovia and Athens Services will host a free compost and mulch giveaway for Monrovia residents. Compost is a nutrient-rich mixture made from organic materials such as green waste, and food scraps, which can be used in potted plants or garden beds.
Mulch is tree trimmings or bark groundcover and is great for improving soil moisture retention, suppressing weeds, and adding a polished look to your landscaping!
- Bring your shovels, dolly, and sturdy container. This is a self-service event.
- No plastic bags allowed.
- Gloves and eye protection are recommended.
- Lastly, be sure to bring your ID with your Monrovia address or Athens bill with the Monrovia address
Monrovia Traffic Signals Project Updates
The City will continue the Monrovia Traffic Signals Project to construct new traffic signal and pedestrian improvements at multiple intersections along Foothill Blvd. and Huntington Dr.
Beginning on April 17, Southern California Edison will temporarily close the 100 block of South California Ave. from Foothill Blvd. to Wildrose Ave. to through traffic in order to connect a new traffic signal to power. To ensure minimal disruption, Southern California Edison has proposed the following time for the street closure:
- Street Closure along 100 Block of South California Ave.
- Start Time: Thursday, April 17 11:45 p.m.
- End Time: Friday, April 18, 6:00 a.m.
Drivers are asked to avoid California Ave. from Foothill Blvd. to Wildrose Ave. for the duration of the street closure.
Local residents should expect on-street parking restrictions, temporary sidewalk closures, and increased noise between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 2:00 p.m., as Southern California Edison continues to perform minor construction activities through early afternoon. Regular street sweeping will not take place in the work area during construction hours, so please take note of posted construction parking signage.
We recognize that construction can be messy and inconvenient, and thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as we work through these improvements! Please note that schedules are subject to change. We appreciate your flexibility.

Potential Traffic Delays
For the week of April 7 – April 11, the following locations will have construction work that may alter traffic and/or sidewalk flow. Please follow all directional signage and worker instructions for your safety.
- April 14 – April 18
- Primrose Avenue and Evergreen Avenue near 127 West Pomona Avenue – Road closure down to one lane
- 200 Block West Duarte Road – Intermittent traffic control
