City Manager's Update | May 2, 2025
Good morning, Monrovians!
What makes Monrovia an All-America City? What makes our town so special? Is it our historic homes? Our beautiful mountains? Our mature trees and green spaces? One of my favorite lessons from the late City Historian, Steve Baker, is this - Monrovia is special because of our people.
Last weekend, Monrovia High School celebrated prom with a "Roaring Twenties" theme. An MHS parent posted on Facebook that she was searching for a period-correct automobile to use for a photo shoot of her daughter and friends. But where to find one? Thankfully, her call for help was answered when Monrovian, Howard, was happy to lend a 1929 Ford Model A! These timeless prom photos now serves as reminders of the role each of us play in "creating community."

In the coming week there are ways you can learn more about our community. Join the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group for their annual Historic Homes Tour on Sunday, or join Monrovia Reads for their "So All May Read" Fundraiser on Thursday, May 8th. Or you can join me next Saturday, May 10, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., when the Monrovia Firefighters Association hosts its annual Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station 101 (141 E Lemon Ave). This event is not just about pancakes; it's about showing support for your local firefighters while having fun as a community. Join us for freshly made pancakes, raffles, a Jr. Firefighter challenge, live demonstrations, and fun for all ages.
By purchasing a ticket for just $8, you'll enjoy a delightful morning and contribute to local Monrovia charities. Tickets will be available at the door. For any questions, please call (626) 256-8181.
Have a great weekend,
Dylan

Adding to the excitement is the PTA's annual silent auction, featuring various items generously donated by local businesses and community members. Honoring Two Pioneering Monrovia Sisters
Join the community in honoring the remarkable legacies of Anna H. Jones and Dr. Sophia B. Jones, trailblazing African American sisters whose lives broke barriers in education and medicine. Though their contributions were nationally significant, their final resting places at Live Oak Memorial Park have remained unmarked until now.
Tomorrow, a special celebration of their lives will begin with a program and luncheon at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church (925 S Shamrock), followed by a grave marker dedication at 3:00 p.m. at Live Oak Memorial Park. The event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP by April 25 to (626) 664-6537 or spicerbatice@gmail.com.
Born in the 1850s, the Jones sisters made historic strides against racial and gender barriers. Anna was a visionary educator and civil rights leader; Sophia, the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School, helped found the nursing program at Spelman College. Both called Monrovia home in their later years.
Come celebrate their enduring impact and help bring long-overdue recognition to two extraordinary women who shaped history!
For more information, please contact the Monrovia ChangeMakers at MonroviaChangeMakers@gmail.com
