City Manager's Update | June 27, 2025
Welcome back to Monrovia Canyon Park!
Every single day for nearly 5 years, I have thought about this day! Everyone felt the pain and sadness when we announced the park was damaged, damaged again, and so on. But I feel so proud for the work done to restore the park and prepare for its reopening. Yesterday morning, the City Council held a small gathering with certain community groups, volunteers, project team members, and their families to reflect on these past 5 years together. We also wanted to thank some amazing folks for their dedication and commitment to Canyon Park over the years, including but not limited to -
- Pokrajac Corporation. This local business, along with their entire team, were the heart and sole of our project. Every ounce of rock and dirt moved, and every inch of replaced utility, street, etc.
- Merrell Johnson Engineering. The City's contract engineer, Brad Merrell, and his team worked tirelessly to troubleshoot the many issues and challenges which came with this project. No matter the challenge...they wanted to ensure the final park design "felt" like Canyon Park when we all returned. They can't wait to see what you all think.
- Canyon Park Volunteers. This group, for over 40 years, have maintained and supported Canyon Park even during the closure. They love and care, deeply.
- Managed Career Solutions. All 10 members of this team spent 40 hours, weekly, to perform brush removal, trail restoration and removal of invasive species. If you ever want to see what hard work and sweat look like...watch these folks for 5 minutes!
- Giggle Fiber. We will all enjoy new broadband/fiber throughout the park, brought to you by this local business. They even provided us with free wireless service throughout the park...don't forget to share your first visit to Canyon Park with us all!
Rebuilding was never an easy task and I couldn't possibly thank the many people who helped make it happen.
As you explore Canyon Park, I hope you remember how far we have come since its initial closure in March of 2020. Canyon Park serves as a reminder for what resiliency, collaboration, and dedication mean to Monrovia.
You'll also FINALLY get to experience the enhancements we've been talking about, including:
- Expanded picnic areas, bbqs (charcoal only, please)
- New Meditation Platform and educational amphitheater
- New enclosed "Welcome Kiosk" for staff and volunteers to use year round
- A new lookout from the upper parking lot with view finders
- Renovated restrooms
- New parking spaces including ADA spaces throughout the park.
- Renovated Nature Center which includes a full restoration of our original "Samson the Bear" statue. The Nature Center is not yet complete but will be in a few weeks.
- Native plants and trees throughout areas disturbed during construction. You'll easily notice that Mother Nature is taking care of the rest!
- A new greenhouse to grow native trees and shrubs to repopulate Canyon Park
- Free high speed Wi-Fi in the amphitheater, which was generously provided by Giggle Fiber
Whether you've been waiting for the park to open or haven't been to the park before, we can't wait to see you again. Welcome back!
Have a great weekend,
Dylan
