City Manager's Update | September 12, 2025
Good morning, Monrovians!
On Friday mornings like today, it can be incredibly hard to find the right words for this weekly newsletter. I hope to always get it right, whatever message I may feel in my heart. Monrovia always has so many wonderful things happening or people to celebrate so most messages are easy to write. When tragic events happen across our country and we all feel the heaviness, it is much more difficult. Do I address a tragedy in Colorado? Do I write about 9/11? Do I talk about the tragedy in Utah (where I also have lots of fond memories of UVU as I grew up nearby)? It can be so hard to find the right words to say, but no matter the message, I hope this newsletter is as much uplifting as it is informational. I hope it highlights the amazing work of so many people in this community, even when we feel sorrow and sadness. I hope the work happening in this All-America community is always bringing people together and making a better place for all.
Yesterday at 6:55 a.m., I was proud to stand by and observe so many of Monrovia's first responders and staff raise and lower the U.S. flag in remembrance of 9/11. We remembered the lives taken and will never forget. I am proud and honored to work with public servants who protect and serve our community every day.
For those wanting to get your hands dirty in the service of others...now is your chance! Community partner, Food Ed, will be hosting Green Care Day this Saturday, September 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This is Food Ed's largest volunteer event of the year, aiming to assist our local schools prepare their gardens for use by students and community. In addition to school gardens, volunteers will also perform work at the Monrovia Community Garden (303 W Colorado Blvd) and Lucinda Garcia Park (502 W Olive Ave). I'll be there too and hope to see many of you help beautify our community.
So come get involved, especially if you have a green thumb! To register, please complete the online registration form, and be sure too bring water, a hat, and closed-toed shoes for garden work!

And if your own gardens need a little love too, our Public Works Department is teaming up with Athens Services to host another FREE compost and mulch event! Be sure to stop by the Public Works Yard (600 S Mountain Ave) this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please bring your ID, Athens bill, a sturdy container, and your shovel! Remember that no plastic bags will be allowed. First come, first served!
Sincerely,
Dylan

Fountain to the Falls Winners!
Thank you to everyone who participated last week in our returning Fountain to the Falls event! It was great to see so many runners, walkers, and volunteers get out so early in the morning to make the fun walk up to the falls! A special thank you to the volunteers, our CERT team, Chick-Fil-A, and of course staff who helped create a successful event!
Although everyone who participated is a winner in my eyes, there were only so many medals to give out. Congratulations to our overall champions, Ben Collins and Christine Glaser, who showed incredible determination and crossed the finish line first! A special recognition to age group winners: Roland Ludwig, Alena Kouzin, Michael Lov, Blake Timmerman, Karen Parga, David Louie, Katey Cabrera, Eric Triplett, Kimberly Gero, Greg Muir, and Laura Wiles.
To view all award-winning times, please visit our Fountain to the Falls Walk/Run webpage!

We are excited to announce the launch of our new online registration system for our City activities and classes! The new system is designed to provide customers with a convenient and easy registration process for classes, trips, special events, and even check facility availability for private events!
Online registration for all Fall Programs and Classes with the new registration system will begin Monday, September 15! All users will need to create a new account when registering for the first time.

Upcoming Changes to Credit Card Payments
The City of Monrovia will soon begin applying a convenience fee for credit card payments. This fee helps to cover the cost of providing this payment option, which the City has previously absorbed on behalf of customers. The convenience fee is equal to the actual amount charged by credit card processors used by the City, and will take effect within the coming weeks.
Customers will continue to have access to no-fee payment options, including paying by cash or check. For water bills, customers may also enroll in the City’s EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) Program. To enroll in the EFT Program, please visit our website.

Fall class registration will launch on Monday, September 15. Stay tuned!
Online Transition
Starting with this Fall issue, the Monrovia Today is transitioning to a primarily digital format, which will help the City reduce printing and allow for quick and easy access to sign up for classes, visit links, and navigate websites. Safe Streets for All Survey - Extended through September 30!
Submit your feedback through September 30, 2025! The City is continuing to collect feedback from all roadway users to improve traffic safety and expand bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. In addition to reporting safety concerns, we encourage you to share other travel-related challenges or observations in Monrovia.
Here are a few examples of helpful feedback:
- “I’d bike more often, but there’s nowhere to park my bike, so I drive instead.”
- “I bike to work on [street name] and see others doing the same. It could benefit from a bike lane or other safety features.”
- “Drivers often speed on [street name], which makes the area feel unsafe.”
- “The bollards at [intersection] make pedestrians more visible. [Different intersection] could benefit from a similar installation, as it’s difficult to see when pedestrians are crossing the street.”
The survey will be available until September 30, 2025. Complete the survey using the following link: https://app.maptionnaire.com/q/monroviacsapbikeplan
Stay connected! Project updates will continue to be posted on the SS4A website. To receive email updates or meeting notices, contact ssousa@monroviaca.gov.

Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills Launches Fund the Bus Campaign
The Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills needs our community's help. Their reliable 20-year-old bus, which has faithfully transported local kids for two decades, has finally broken down for good. With only two small vans left, the Club is struggling to get students to the programs they depend on.
The Club is working to replace that one old bus with two new 24-passenger buses, which would double their capacity to serve even more kids safely and reliably. For over 30 years, the Club has been a cornerstone of our community, providing a safe haven where children find mentorship, friendship, and opportunity after school.
Right now, transportation is the biggest barrier keeping kids from accessing these life-changing programs. When children can get to the Club, amazing things happen - they participate in evidence-based programming, build lasting relationships with caring adults, and develop into the leaders our community needs.
Every donation helps fuel not just a bus, but a child's future.
Visit the Boys & Girl's Club of the Foothills online to donate and help change lives by the busload!
