City Manager's Update | December 26, 2025
Good morning, Monrovians!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas holiday! Perhaps beyond the joyful events and activities, and even the gifts on Christmas morning...my favorite part of the holiday is the celebration and remembrance of our traditions. In my family, we have collected countless ornaments from the places we've visited. When we decorate our Christmas tree, we share stories about our family trips and activities. Another tradition is that each Christmas morning, my mother would bake what she calls "Christmas Morning Rolls." There would be generous amounts of bacon and cold Diet Mountain Dew nearby...but that's been my Christmas breakfast since I was a child and I am honored to continue this tradition with my own kids now.
And while we're all excited for fun that awaits in 2026, let's not get ahead of ourselves as we close out 2025 with a few more days of events and fun! City staff and Old Town Merchants have been preparing for the year's final celebrations: the Noon Years Eve and New Year's Eve Countdown events on Myrtle Ave!
Join us on Wednesday, December 31, for the annual Noon Year’s Eve Family Event! This is perfect for families looking to celebrate the holiday without staying up late. Activities include live music, arts and crafts, an inflatable obstacle course, games, and a special countdown to Noon Year's Eve! All ages are welcome to participate in family fun activities. This event is free and will take place in Library Park (321 S Myrtle Ave) from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Our nighttime celebration will take place on Wednesday, December 31, to ring in the New Year! We'll have a live DJ, dancing, and the lighting of the New Year's Eve Ball at midnight! The fun begins at 10 p.m. on the 400 block of Myrtle Ave and we can all celebrate the countdown at midnight. We hope to see you there!
As a reminder, City facilities are operating on a Limited Operations Schedule through Friday, January 2. The schedule allows us to catch up on a backlog of work while also allowing hard-working City employees time to spend with their own families for the holidays. Also, there will not be a City Manager's Update newsletter next Friday, January 2.
I hope you all have a Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Dylan

Holiday Lights Recycling
Have any faulty holiday string lights taking up space in your storage bins? While they may not belong on your tree, they definitely don’t belong in the trash or your curbside recycling bin. Holiday string lights are considered “tanglers” and can cause damage to typical recycling equipment. Instead, recycle your holiday lights through the following mail-in programs:
Monrovia Public Works does not accept holiday lights at our e-waste collection site, nor are they disposable via curbside service with Athens.
Thank you for keeping holiday waste out of landfills and recycling equipment!
Holiday Tree Recycling
Properly recycle your holiday trees by placing them curbside on your regular trash collection day. The collected trees will be composted into a nutrient-rich soil that can be used in agriculture, public parks, and landscaping. Please remove ornaments, tinsel, plastic bags, nails, lights, and plastic or metal stands.
Holiday trees will be collected beginning December 27, 2025 through January 10, 2026.
For more information, contact Athens Services at (888) 336-6100.
