City Manager's Update | January 9, 2026

Post Date:01/09/2026 10:30 AM

Good morning, Monrovians,

Earlier this week, January 7th marked the one-year anniversary of the Eaton Fire, one of the most destructive natural disasters in California’s history. The devastating fire took the lives of at least 19 people, burned over 9,000 structures, and affected the lives of countless others. The most devastating disaster in our county's history will also require the longest recovery in our county's history...so many victims are still displaced and, frankly, will never fully return to "normal," whatever that may look like. Our hearts and prayers are with the countless wildfire victims as they continue their journey of recovery. I only hope the new year brings plentiful opportunities for us all to assist Eaton Fire victims.

We are also ready to reopen the City's 9th park! You're all invited to a ribbon cutting and dedication event for Satoru Tsuneishi Park (1111 Encino Ave) on Tuesday, January 13, at 3:00 p.m.  We will celebrate the grand opening with remarks from the Monrovia City Council, members of the Tsuneishi family, and a special Japanese Taiko drum performance. It will be a day of celebration, remembrance and respect as we honor the many Japanese American families who have contributed so much to Monrovia over the years, particularly including Satoru Tsuneishi and his family. We hope you can join us.

Finally, the 2026 Annual State of the City event is fast-approaching and we need your help! As part of this year's program, we'd like to highlight achievements from those who make our community an All-America City...you! We are asking your help in sharing with us accomplishments, awards or achievements that we can highlight as part of the presentation.

I'm excited to kickoff the new year with the opening of a new public park, and "a little birdie" tells me that we will soon have a reopened pool at the high school. I hope to see you in the new year!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Dylan

City Council Considering Donation of Land within Hillside Wilderness Preserve

On December 23, the City Council held a Special Meeting to consider the donation of 5.19 acres within the Hillside Wilderness Preserve (HWP), home to the historic “M,” a local landmark.

For nearly 40 years, the community has worked to protect the Monrovia hillsides from development and preserve the hillsides as open space. Acceptance of the 5.19 acre donation would expand the overall footprint of the HWP and permanently preserve the historic “M” property. The City would assume responsibility for the ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and recreational use of the property, along with any future costs associated with preserving or improving the site.

At this time, the City has not yet finalized the donation and will continue working with the property owner who has been working generously with the City to preserve this property including the Big M. I will be sure to provide more details as they become available.

Share Your Achievements! | State of the City 2026

If your school, non-profit, church, or other organization has achieved a milestone, received an award, gained recognition, or completed a project, please share it with us so we can honor your efforts in our address!

Please email Jocelyn Casas at jcasas@monroviaca.gov to submit your achievements.

Volunteers Needed for Point-In-Time Homeless Count | Wednesday, January 21
