City Manager's Update | April 10, 2026

Post Date:04/10/2026 10:30 AM

Good morning, Monrovians!

This Saturday has something for just about everyone! Whether you're looking to refresh your garden or go wine tasting in Old Town, April 11 brings two community favorites back to Monrovia.

In partnership with Athens Services, our Free Compost & Mulch Giveaway returns tomorrow, April 11, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Yard (600 S. Mountain). It's a great opportunity to pick up quality material for your garden at no cost! Bring your ID or Athens bill, a sturdy container, and your own shovel! Free compost and mulch are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is a good idea. Although rain is expected tomorrow, forecasts do not anticipate rain during the event. If forecasts change between now and tomorrow, an update will be shared on the City's social media accounts.

To round out the day, the Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board and Old Town merchants will host the Annual Wine Walk tomorrow night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m...rain or shine! Those 21 and older are welcome to spend the evening strolling through Old Town, sampling wines, and supporting our Old Town businesses! All ticketed guests will receive a tasting glass, a map of participating locations, and tickets for 12 wine tastings.

Pre-sale tickets are $50 and still available through the end of today at the Monrovia Community Center, Charlie's House (430 S. Myrtle Ave.), or online through the City's registration portal. I strongly encourage those interested in attending to purchase tickets today, as only a limited number of same-day tickets will be available at the event! For questions or assistance purchasing tickets, please contact the Community Center at (626) 256-8246.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Dylan

Monrovia PD Awarded $1.031M Grant

Congressman Gil Cisneros has awarded the Monrovia Police Department a $1.031 million grant to support a major upgrade to its communication system! Right now, the department’s dispatch system is outdated and makes it difficult to communicate effectively with nearby and regional public safety agencies, and this upgrade will change that. By improving how agencies connect and share information, the project will help ensure faster, more coordinated responses when seconds matter most.

Monrovia Named 2026 All-America City Finalist

Monrovia has been named a finalist for the 2026 All-America City Award! It's a meaningful recognition to be named a finalist, and a reflection of the community's ongoing commitment to civic engagement, collaboration, and impact.

We are excited for the opportunity to once again showcase our community in Denver, Colorado. This year’s theme is “Strengthening Civic Health and Building Trust.” Our 2026 application highlights programs including the Monrovia Police Department’s Community Activist Policing Bureau (CAP) and the San Gabriel Valley Crisis Assistance Response & Engagement (SGV CARE) program, the City's partnership with the Monrovia Community Adult School, and our Biking for Bucks program. To learn more about the award and event, please take a look at the National Civic League webpage.

Blondie's Cubs Update

Blondie's two male cubs are receiving specialized care at the San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center. Wildlife veterinarians report both cubs are healthy and estimated to be 2 to 3 months old. In the months ahead, they will receive round-the-clock care and carefully designed enrichment to help them develop the instincts they will need to survive on their own. October 2026 is a possible release window, with the goal of returning them to the Angeles National Forest, pending State approval.

For those looking to help, donations can be made directly at sdhumane.org/monroviabearcubs and all contributions go to the San Diego Humane Society for the cubs' care.

Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Last Day to Comment on Draft Plans

The City of Monrovia is pleased to announce that the Draft Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and Draft Bicycle Master Plan Update are now available for public review. These plans are the result of data analysis and community input over the past several months, and we are grateful to everyone who participated by attending meetings, completing surveys, and sharing valuable insights about transportation and mobility in Monrovia.

Community members are encouraged to review the draft plans on the project website and share comments or questions by emailing ssousa@monroviaca.gov by April 10, 2026.

The website also includes links to presentations from previous community outreach meetings.

We look forward to continuing the conversation and working together to make Monrovia’s streets safer and well-connected for all!

Monrovia Garden Club: The Dirt on Plant Reproduction

The Monrovia Garden Club welcomes speaker Sandy Masuo on Monday, April 27, for a program exploring the science of plant reproduction! From selfing and cloning to the surprisingly complex relationships plants maintain with their pollinators. It's a fascinating look at the biological processes that make nearly all life on Earth possible, and one that promises to change the way you see an ordinary flower.

Masuo brings an impressive background to the subject. She currently serves as the botanical content specialist at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, and previously spent 18 years as an associate editor at the Los Angeles Zoo. She has also taught classes ranging from succulent gardening to birdwatching at local community colleges.

The meeting is held at Fellowship Hall of the Monrovia Community Church, 101 E. Foothill Blvd. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., with the program starting promptly at 7:00 p.m.
