City Manager's Update | July 3, 2026

Good morning, Monrovians,

Last weekend, a delegation of Monrovia representatives traveled to Denver, Colorado, to participate in the 2026 All-America City competition hosted by the National Civic League. While Monrovia was not selected as a winner this year, we remain deeply proud and honored to have been named a finalist for the 3rd time in 4 years. Competing alongside other cities that are leading inspiring programs and initiatives serves as a reminder of the qualities that make communities like ours truly exceptional.

What fuels me even more, was working with community members for these various programs and partners such as Biking for Bucks, the SGV Care Team, and the Monrovia Community Adult School. These initiatives foster connection, provide care, and create opportunities that are unique to our city. The entire delegation felt that, regardless of an award or title from the competition, we have so much for which to be proud. None of these achievements are possible without the support and commitment the community! Thank you for your continued encouragement and for helping to make Monrovia the remarkable community which it is.

 

 

There’s also no better way to celebrate our community and nation than with our annual 4th of July event! Get ready for fireworks, live music, and community fun! Our 4th of July Concert and Fireworks event kicks off tomorrow afternoon, July 4, in Library Park (321 S Myrtle Ave)! The festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. with a DJ, followed by live entertainment from the Blue Breeze Band at 7:00 p.m., performing a high-energy blend of Motown, R&B, Soul, Funk, Jazz, and Blues.

Then, grab a good spot with family and friends in the park or around Old Town as the night wraps up with a spectacular fireworks show starting around 9:00 p.m.

Looking to claim the perfect viewing spot in Library Park? You can begin reserving space the morning of July 4! Each group may reserve up to a 10-by-10-foot area. Just be sure that your space is supervised at all times, and please leave room for your neighbors!

Many of our Old Town businesses will be open throughout the day, so be sure to stop by one (or more!) for a bite to eat or a refreshing drink as you enjoy the evening.

    • 4th of July Concert & Firework Show at Library Park – Parking

    Due to the 4th of July event, several street closures will be in effect in the surrounding area.

    • Myrtle Avenue from Foothill to Lemon. The Foothill Park Plaza will remain accessible for parking.
    • Palm Avenue from Myrtle Avenue to Primrose Avenue
    • Lime Avenue from Myrtle Avenue to Primrose Avenue

    At 8:00 p.m., Primrose Avenue will be closed from Palm Avenue to Lime Avenue.

    Grand Opening & Charity Soiree: The Arthur Blair Historic Inn | Saturday, July 4

    A restored 1887 Victorian estate in Old Town Monrovia is opening its doors to the public this Fourth of July. The Arthur Blair Historic Inn, located at 512 S Ivy Ave., will host a Grand Opening Charity Soiree on Saturday, July 4, from 6 to 10 p.m., featuring self-guided tours, fine refreshments, and live chamber music.

    The event honors the late Steve Baker, whose family home the property once was. Following his passing, co-owners worked with the Monrovia Old House Preservation Group to restore the Victorian estate over three years. The inn also includes a new cottage and bar and bistro.

    All proceeds from the soiree will benefit the Monrovia Historical Society's Anderson House, supporting its ongoing restoration and Steve Baker's vision of an immersive home tour experience set in 1887 Monrovia. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite.

    Walk with a Doc: Fourth of July Walk

    Walk with a Doc is holding a special walk this Saturday, July 4, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Recreation Park, meeting at the picnic tables just north of the Boys and Girls Club. The session opens with a brief talk on how social connection supports health and longevity, followed by a group walk for the remainder of the hour. The walk is open to all ages and abilities.     World Cup Watch Party in the Park: USA vs. Belgium | Monday, July 6

    We're hosting a free World Cup Round of 16 watch party at Library Park next Monday, July 6, at 5 p.m. Join us in cheering on Team USA against Belgium on the big screen, with fun for the whole family, including face painting, games, and crafts on site.

    Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and consider grabbing dinner from a nearby Old Town restaurant before heading over. The event is free and open to all ages. For more information, contact the Community Center at 626-256-8246.

     

    Support Monrovia's Parks and Open Space With MPWR's Online Silent Auction

    Monrovia Parks, Wilderness, and Recreation Foundation (MPWR) is accepting item donations for its 2026 online silent auction, running July 20-26, with proceeds supporting the city's parks and open space. Auction items typically include art, jewelry, event tickets, restaurant and business gift cards, wine, services, pet items, and collectibles. Donated items may be tax deductible; consult a tax advisor for details. Residents interested in donating, or with questions about the auction, can contact Auction Lead Donna Baker at dbakermonrovia@gmail.com.

    Bidders can register online now to set up an account, browse items as they're added ahead of the launch, and get notified when bidding opens.

    2025 Consumer Confidence Report

    The City of Monrovia's 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, also known as the Consumer Confidence Report or CCR, is now available on the City's website. The CCR provides detailed information about the quality of Monrovia's drinking water for the previous full calendar year. For 2025, as in previous years, the City met all state and federal drinking water standards.

    Save the Date: Community Bike Ride to Movie in the Park | Saturday, August 1

    Mark your calendars for an upcoming community bike ride the evening of Saturday, August 1, just before the City's Movie in the Park event at Library Park. Funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), this ride will help City staff and participating riders evaluate the cycling experience in Monrovia, including hazards, perceived safety, comfort, connectivity, and more. After the ride, relax with fellow community members and enjoy Lilo and Stitch (live action) on the big screen.

    AI Awareness Workshop @ Monrovia Library | Monday, July 13

    Explore the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Monrovia Public Library. Join us on Monday, July 13, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for an informative workshop designed to build confidence and understanding of AI by exploring what it is, how it's used in everyday life, and the many ways AI can be a helpful tool. Attendees are encouraged to bring a smartphone to participate in the interactive portion of the program. No prior experience is required. Register here.

    Solid Waste Service Rates Adjusting Starting July 1, 2026

    Beginning July 1, 2026, solid waste collection rates will increase by 4.68% in accordance with the City's franchise agreement with Athens Services. This annual adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and helps ensure continued reliable service for Monrovia residents and businesses.

    Youth Commission Positions Open

    Looking for a fun way to stay involved this summer? If you're a student in grades 6-12, the Youth Commission is a great opportunity to make new friends, develop leadership skills, give back to your community, and help plan events for local teens. Whether you're passionate about volunteering, sharing your ideas, or trying something new, there's a place for you on the Youth Commission.

    Work Around Town
