City Manager's Update | July 10, 2026

Post Date:07/10/2026 10:30 AM

Good morning, Monrovians,

What a week it's been in Monrovia! Thank you to everyone who came out for our 4th of July Concert and Fireworks Show last weekend, and for our World Cup Watch Party in the Park this past Monday. It was truly special to celebrate our country's 250th birthday and cheer on Team USA on the international stage, all within a few days apart. I'm very thankful and proud of our staff, volunteers, and community partners who worked hard behind the scenes to make both events possible and memorable for you all!

And what better way to kick off the 4th of July event than to visit Monrovia's newest gem...the Arthur Blair Historic Inn! Just prior to the fireworks show, and after years of significant work and restoration, the community was welcomed inside Monrovia's newest gem. If you haven't seen the Inn, check out this video and be sure to swing by. You'll soon be able to visit the Inn, book a night's stay or stop by Viola's restaurant for a quick bite.

Congratulations to Joshua Cain and Jeff Godbold on your newest success story and to the many, many others who helped this team bring these historic properties back to life!

There's still more fun ahead in town this summer! Our Summer Concerts in the Park series moves to Library Park this Sunday, July 12 at 7 p.m., featuring Blue Breeze Band, performing Motown and Soul music. Then next Saturday, July 18, we kick off our Movies in the Park program at dusk with "Cars" at Station Square Park! We hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Dylan

  • Monrovia Awarded Grants Totaling $20.2M

The City of Monrovia has secured more than $20.2 million in grant funding across projects supporting traffic safety, wildfire resilience, and water quality improvements.

The State of California's Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the City $25,000 to hold bike safety workshops, host a community bicycle rodeo, provide helmets and safety gear to residents, and support active transportation programs and events such as Walk, Bike, and Roll.

The Rivers and Mountains Conservancy has awarded Monrovia $800,000 through its Forest Resilience Program Grant. The funding will support hazardous fuel reduction, public education, and restoration projects throughout the Monrovia hillsides, advancing the City's Hillside Wilderness Plan and resource management goals as part of its proactive approach to community safety.

Next month, the LA County Board of Supervisors will award the Rio Hondo/San Gabriel River Watershed Management Authority $19,367,616 for the Peck Lake Road Project. The funding will help improve regional water quality, increase local water supply, add drought-tolerant landscaping at the park, and install a multi-use walking and bike path for active transportation.

Monrovia to Acquire 347 Highland Place Property to Preserve Open Space Adjacent to Hillside Wilderness Preserve

Since 2019, the owners of 347 Highland Place have been planning to demolish a single family residence and construct three (2) large residential homes totaling over 13,000 square feet. The owners and City of Monrovia have agreed to the City purchasing the 8-acre property. This means the proposed development would not proceed and the City would add the property to the Hillside Wilderness Preserve. The City will purchase the property for $2 million using restricted funds which can only be used for open space acquisition. As a condition of the sale, the current owners will demolish the existing single-family home and return the site to its natural condition.

Over the coming weeks, the proposed acquisition will go through several public review steps, including the Development Review Committee, Planning Commission, and City Council. The City will share updates on each stage of the process in future editions of the CM Update.

    Samson Goes to School Program

At this week's City Council meeting, the Monrovia City Council approved the Samson Goes to School Program, an expansion of the City's longtime Adopt a Samson Bear Program, bringing custom-designed Samson Bears to five Monrovia Unified School District elementary schools: Bradoaks Elementary Science Academy, Mayflower Elementary School, Monroe Elementary School, Plymouth Elementary School, and Wild Rose School of Creative Arts. Each bear will reflect the identity and spirit of its school, based on design concepts developed by students and school staff. Local artist Traci Loving-Salazar, who has painted several Samson Bears for Monrovia and community organizations, will bring the designs to life!

The Samson Goes to School Program is part of the City's One City, One Story (OCOS) initiative. Last month, the City was awarded a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support the 2027 OCOS community reading program. The NEA Big Read brings communities together through shared reading experiences that inspire meaningful conversations, celebrate diverse voices, and foster connection through literature and the arts. In partnership with Monrovia Unified School District and local community organizations, the grant will support a variety of programs for all ages to celebrate the stories that connect us. More information on OCOS 2027 will be shared in the fall, with programs officially kicking off in January 2027.

Blondie's Bear Cubs Continue to Thrive at Ramona Wildlife Center

Blondie's cubs are now about six months old and continuing to thrive. They’re showing all the natural behaviors the team at the Wildlife Center hopes to see as they prepare for life back in the wild. From swimming and splashing in their pools to sampling a wide variety of native plants, the cubs are growing more confident and curious everyday. They also receive a daily gruel supplement to provide the nutrition they would still get from nursing in the wild.

The wildlife care team is helping the cubs build essential survival skills by providing root balls and decaying logs filled with insects, which they eagerly tear apart in search of tasty bugs. Just as encouraging, the cubs instinctively run and hide in their den whenever staff pass nearby, a healthy fear of people that's critical for their future in the wild.

Looking ahead, the Ramona Wildlife Center staff will be meeting with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in the near future to finalize the cubs' release plan. The goal is for Blondie's cubs to return to the wild this fall, and we're excited to continue supporting them every step of the way.

Those wishing to help raise funds for the care of these bear cubs can contribute financially to sdhumane.org/monroviabears

    Parks Make Life Better Month

At this week's City Council meeting, the Monrovia City Council proclaimed July 2026 as "Parks Make Life Better Month". The proclamation recognizes parks and recreation as an integral part of our community, supporting programming such as summer concerts in the park, senior outings, contract classes, youth programming, indoor recreational spaces, and nature and wildlife education. Parks play an important role in improving mental wellbeing, increasing cognitive performance, supporting physical health, and reducing stress, while offering residents a safe space to access nature, socialize, play, exercise, and relax. We encourage all residents to use and enjoy Monrovia's parks and recreational opportunities this month!

    Smart Irrigation Month

July is about watering smarter, not harder. Now is the time to give your irrigation system a smart upgrade. Water-efficient irrigation systems help to conserve water while keeping your landscape healthy from a weather-based irrigation controller that automatically adjusts to the changing weather conditions, to a soil moisture meter that knows exactly when its time to water your plants.

The City offers a range of residential and commercial rebates on outdoor devices to help you save water, money and time. Available devices include:

    • Rotating Sprinkler Nozzle
    • Weather Based Irrigation Controller
    • Soil Moisture Meter
    • Rain Barrel
    • Turf Replacement

Be sure to check the SoCalWater$mart website for qualifying devices and the application process.
