City Manager's Update | July 17, 2026

Post Date:07/17/2026 10:30 AM

Good morning, Monrovians,

What a fun weekend coming up in town! Tomorrow, July 18, we've got two wonderful ways for families, friends, and neighbors to spend time together outdoors.

In the morning, join us at the Canyon Park Nature Center for Kids Craft in the Canyon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Park Naturalists will help kids explore the canyon and turn what they discover in the park into hands-on art. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Monrovia Parks, Wilderness & Recreation Foundation (MPWR). Preregistration is not required but is first come, first served and we encourage you to show up early. If you aren't able to make it out tomorrow, there is another event scheduled for Saturday, August 22!

Then, as the sun goes down, our Movies in the Park series kicks off at Station Square Park with a screening of Disney's "Cars." Bring a blanket or chairs, pack some snacks, and settle in for a relaxing evening under the stars...it's free and open to everyone! Here's the full lineup for this summer:

  • July 18 – Cars, Station Square Park (1629 S. Myrtle Ave)
  • July 25 – The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Julian Fisher Park (915 S. California Ave)
  • August 1 – Lilo & Stitch (2025), Library Park (321 S. Myrtle Ave)
  • August 8 – Wicked: For Good, Recreation Park (620 S. Shamrock Ave)

Whether you're crafting in the canyon or catching a movie in the park, I hope you'll join us for a great start to the weekend!

Sincerely,

Dylan

Power Outages in Monrovia Update

The City of Monrovia understands that the recent power outages have caused disruptions for the community. According to SCE, the outages were caused by animals and vegetation coming into contact with electrical equipment. SCE shared that it continues to inspect and maintain its equipment, manage vegetation near power lines, and evaluate additional measures to help reduce outages caused by wildlife and vegetation.

Residents are encouraged to report trees or branches growing into or near power lines. Stay informed by signing up for outage alerts to receive the latest updates directly from SCE.

Insurance Options Expanding in Wildfire-Distressed Areas

The California Department of Insurance announced that a new group of insurers is expanding coverage options for homeowners in wildfire-distressed areas. Liberty Mutual and USAA, two of the state's largest homeowners insurance writers, along with new market entrant MS Transverse Insurance Group, are among the companies growing their footprint. For residents in higher wildfire-risk areas, this could mean more coverage choices in the coming months. Full details on the participating companies and the state's broader insurance reform efforts are available through the California Department of Insurance.

Disposing Medications & Household Hazardous Waste Properly

Have old or unused medications at home? Don't flush them or toss them in the trash. Instead, drop them off safely at a local pharmacy, such as the Vons Pharmacy at 130 W. Foothill Blvd in Monrovia. LA County also hosts periodic Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events and maintains a few permanent drop-off locations for meds, batteries, paint, and more. Find dates and locations on the Los Angeles County Public Work’s website.

And a friendly reminder...the e-waste drop-off is for electronics only, such as TVs, computers, printers, and similar items. Medications and other household hazardous waste should go to the HHW events/locations above to keep things running safely for everyone. Learn more about disposing medications and household hazardous waste properly.
