If you're looking for a more hands-on way to get involved, Food ED is inviting residents to be part of a citywide day of community action on Saturday, September 12, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., where volunteers will help revitalize school gardens at Clifton, Santa Fe, and Plymouth, as well as the Monrovia Community Garden. There will be tasks and activities available for all ages. Whether you're coming with a school group, a volunteer group, family, friends, or on your own, everyone is welcome to pitch in!

Looking ahead, save the date for the 36th Annual Make a Difference Day, taking place on Saturday, October 24, from 8 a.m. to noon at Library Park! Hosted by the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley, the day is built around improving homes and green spaces, beautifying our city, and sharing a community meal together. Sponsorships are available as well; businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring Make a Difference Day can contact Macy Gracia, Executive Director, at 626-256-8187 or through vcsgv.org!

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month and living in the foothills comes with unique responsibilities. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing practical tips to help your household navigate wildfire risks, seasonal weather hazards, and living safely with wildlife.

RSVP Today! Another Community Bike Ride/Audit | Saturday, September 12

Join us on Saturday, September 12 for a free, family-friendly Community Bike Ride and Audit!

During the ride, we’ll ask for feedback to help improve the Monrovia cycling experience. The ride will start at Library Park, with participants expected to meet near the fountain.

The route will focus on key streets highlighted in the City’s recent Bicycle Master Plan Update. It will be different from the route from the August 1st Community Ride and Audit.

What to expect:

• Approximately 6 miles of cycling with gradual elevation gain at a pace of 10-12 miles per hour (beginner/intermediate experience level)
• On-street biking, sharing space with cars and other roadway users
• Bike marshals will be present, helping lead the route and keeping the group together
• Share feedback on your experience riding in Monrovia through guided written and oral responses
• A fun evening spent with community!

What to bring:

• A functional bicycle or wheeled device (highly recommended with gears; e-bikes are welcome)
• A helmet (required for ages under 18)
• Water bottle (filled with water)
• Snacks (if needed)
• Bike lights (front white light and back red light)
• Bikes with training wheels are not permitted, but children are welcome to attend if pulled in a trailer or on a bike child seat

Participants should register before the event, but we’ll also welcome same-day registration.

Funding for the community bike ride portion of this event was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

No Street Sweeping and Trash Collection for Labor Day Holiday

There will be no residential street sweeping and no street sweeping parking enforcement from Monday, September 7 to Friday, September 11.

Residential trash collection service will be delayed by one day during the week of September 7. For example, if your regularly scheduled day is Monday, then collection will occur Tuesday and so forth.

Blood Drive at the Monrovia Public Library | Thursday, September 17

The Monrovia Police Department is hosting a blood drive on Thursday, September 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Monrovia Public Library! Donors who give blood between September 1 and 20 will receive an exclusive Red Cross x Hello Kitty collectible item while supplies last.

Request a City Tree Today!

The City of Monrovia is about to kick off our annual tree planting program and residents are invited to request a city tree be planted in the public right-of-way in front of their property.

What to know:

• The City will provide and plant the tree at no cost to the resident.
• The City’s contracted tree planters, Amigos de los Rios, will maintain the tree for the first four months after planting.
• After the initial maintenance period, property owners will be responsible for watering the tree to help it thrive.
• All new trees will be added to the City’s routine tree trimming schedule.
• Each site will be reviewed to ensure it doesn’t conflict with existing utility lines or spacing requirements.

This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your street, boost property value, and contribute to a healthier environment!

Casino Night and Speakeasy | Saturday, September 19

The Rotary Club of Monrovia is bringing 1920s glamour to the Monrovia Community Center for its Casino Night & Speakeasy on Saturday, September 19, from 6 to 10 p.m.! Guests can expect casino games, a live auction, food, an open bar, and music from “The Doo Drops”. Tickets are $75 in advance and $85 at the door, and available online now!

Sponsorships are also available for businesses and residents who want to support the evening.

• Speakeasy Sponsorships ($3,000, three available, one each for food, music, and bar) include four tickets, event signage, and recognition at two Rotary club meetings.
• Gatsby Sponsorships ($1,000, unlimited) include two tickets and event signage, and
• Moonshine Sponsorships ($500, unlimited) include one ticket and tabletop signage.

Proceeds support the Rotary Club of Monrovia Foundation's community projects.

Monrovia Legacy Project Adds 1,776 New Items

The Monrovia Legacy Project has grown again, with 1,776 new historic photos and documents added in honor of America's 250th birthday, bringing the collection's total to 17,000 items! The archive has seen heavy use since launching ten years ago, logging 142,000 searches overall and 47,000 in the past year alone, with 79% of searchers finding what they were looking for.

A new "What's New in 2026" section on the collection's welcome page highlights the latest additions, and updated permissions and use fees make it easier for residents to download and print images for personal use. Much of this latest batch comes from Steve Baker's personal collection, passed down through his family over five decades, along with additional material from the Monrovia Historical Museum. The project's volunteers, including Dennis Sanchez, Linda Markmiller, and Allison Feng, contributed scanning and photo correction work that made the release possible, and the City continues to support the project's ongoing growth. Fountain to the Falls Returns | Saturday, September 19

Join us on Saturday, September 19, 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. for our annual Fountain to the Falls 10K Run and Walk, one of Monrovia's favorite community traditions. The event begins and ends at the Library Park Fountain. The 6.38 mile course travels through Monrovia's northern neighborhoods, continues into Monrovia Canyon Park, reaches the Canyon Park Waterfall, before returning to Library Park. Register now on our website.

Runners and walkers of all ages are encouraged to register early. Every participant will receive a commemorative medal, and awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers in each age group as well as the overall winners. Earthquake Workshop | Saturday, September 12

The 7th annual Earthquake Workshop is fast approaching and the RSVP response has been very positive, with over two-thirds of available spots reserved! As a reminder, the Earthquake Workshop will be held on Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Community Room of the Monrovia Library.

The workshop is free, but you must RSVP if you want to attend as space is limited. The guest speaker will be Margaret Vinci from Caltech. Also present will be representatives from several utilities, the American Red Cross, and others. Lunch will be provided at no charge. If you would like to attend, you can RSVP online. Monrovia Fire & Rescue is offering free emergency preparedness training for families this month. The LISTOS program is hosting one more four-hour session in English and Spanish, covering hazard identification, evacuation planning, utility interruptions, fire extinguisher use, disaster kit preparation, first aid, home organization, and emotional support. This is an all-ages class with both classroom instruction and hands-on practice. Sign up your family for this fun and informative class today!

The final sessions for both languages is Saturday, August 29.

The following locations will have construction work that may alter traffic flow and/or sidewalk access. Please follow all directional signage and work instruction for your safety.

JPI will perform street paving along Magnolia Avenue between Genoa Street and Duarte Road on Friday, August 28. Drivers should expect additional traffic delays along Magnolia, and at the Duarte Road and Magnolia Avenue intersection.
